Portrait by A.A. Smith

Strong sixth-plate daguerreotype of a man by A.A. Smith, as identified on the bottom of the brass mat.  According to Craig’s Registry, Smith was listed in Seneca Falls, NY.  Smith did a wonderful job in capturing this gentleman’s portrait.  While dressed in a manner suggesting a professional career we can see bags developing under his eyes showing the hardships of the times.  The daily grind has already begun to take its toll, however he is still meticulously groomed with nary a hair out of place.  The image is in excellent condition with light tinting to his face and a nice band of perimeter tarnish.  The very light line to his right seems to be original to the process and might be a buffing mark, but it is hard to determine even under magnification.  The image is housed in a full leather case with a repaired spine.
